Did you know that the piano is classified as both a string and percussion instrument? This is because while it has strings—making it a string instrument—those strings are struck with a hammer—making it a percussion instrument.
But the piano owes its creation to the evolution of three instruments: the hammered dulcimer, the clavichord, and the harpsichord. Over the next few months, we will explore these different instruments and how they resulted in the familiar black and white keyed instrument we recognize today.
