Global Music Notation: India

Indian music features one of the oldest known systems of musical notation in continuous use. In ancient times (1500 BC - AD 1200), it began with Vedic chants, in which priests transformed sacred hymns into melodic rituals using early scales and simple notation.

The medieval times were transformative, with Persian and Islamic influences enriching tradition. By the 13th-15th centuries, music diverged into two traditions: Hindustani (North) music blended Indian roots with Persian elements, and Carnatic (South) music retained a stronger Vedic and Hindu devotional character.

Fearing theft, melodic “songbooks” lived in memory, not on paper. Yet, in the 19th century, colonial rule introduced Western notation and printing. However, Indian music notation still sketches only the melodic skeleton. Generally, the improvisations are learned by ear, preserving the ancient traditions that cannot fully be captured on paper.
